3 जून 2013 को जिया खान मुंबई के जुहू स्थित अपने घर में मृत पाई गईं। जिया की मौत के बाद उनके घर से छह पन्नों की एक चिट्ठी बरामद हुई, जो जिया ने सूरज पंचोली के नाम लिखी थी। इस चिट्ठी के आधार पर जिया की मौत के कुछ ही दिनों बाद सूरज पर आत्महत्या के लिए उकसाने का मामला दर्ज किया गया था। जिया खान की मां राबिया ने अदालत को बताया कि उनकी बेटी की मौत एक हत्या है, आत्महत्या नहीं। पोस्टमॉर्टम रिपोर्ट में पुष्टि हुई कि जिया की मौत फांसी पर लटकने के कारण ही हुई। जुलाई 2013 में सूरज पंचोली को जमानत दे दी गई थी। बाद में उन्हें जिया खान की मौत में किसी भी तरह की संलिप्तता से भी बरी कर दिया गया। इसके बाद अक्तूबर में राबिया ने मामले में सीबीआई जांच के लिए अदालत से गुहार लगाई।
